about

The bathroom walls in Liz Rog’s Decorah, IA Fern Hollow cabin host
tens of post-it notes, greeting cards, and posters beaming wisdom words.
While visiting there in 2017 to take part in a
“Singing in the African American Tradition” workshop with Ysaye Barnwell,
I read: “It doesn’t matter how long you have forgotten,
only how soon you remember,”
& immediately went on a walk down the road through the forest,
and caught this melody.

“It doesn’t matter how long you forget, only how soon you remember!”
— Stephen Levine

The second part floated in a year or two later,
and the hums came in this spring while preparing for recording.

I like to sing it when i’ve been acting bad,
remember that i don’t have to claw my way back or hang my head in shame,
remember i don’t need to punish myself (....unless it’s fun, thanks Existential Kink).
We get to choose Now, wherever we want to.

lyrics

It doesn't matter how long
how long you have forgotten
only how soon you remember
It doesn't matter how long
how long you have forgotten
Remember
Remember Now

We were born to wake up
every little thing that happens fills my cup
i took form to come home
i'm ready
